Q: How do I operate the xSystem 3.0?

To turn the system on, press and hold the on/off button (at the bottom) for 3 seconds then release and the LEDs will light from the bottom upwards. It will settle on the chosen flow rate LED.

To turn off, follow the same procedure and the LEDs will light up and turn off, one by one, downwards.

To increase the flow rate, make sure the system is switched on and press the upwards pointing arrow and the LED will move one position higher.

To reduce the flow rate, press the downward pointing arrow and the LED will move one position lower.

To move between flow rate levels when on the top or bottom LED, press the corresponding up or down arrow and the level change will be indicated with the number of flashes (e.g. 3 flashes to 2 flashes or 1 flash to 2 flashes)

Set the flow rate on the middle section indicated by 2 LED flashes and adjust if required up/down depending on your riding conditions.

The xSystem will automatically switch on/off and no manual activation is necessary. You can manually turn the system on/off if you transport the motorcycle on a ferry or trailer.

Q: Are the xSystem 3.0 controls more responsive when pressed?

Yes, from feedback received from the previous generation of xSystem the response time of the control buttons has improved and will keep up to speed with fast presses from the user when adjusting flow rate.

Q: How does the xSystem know when to dispense oil?

Through sensing the motion of the motorcycle the xSystem dispenses Scottoil onto the chain at a controlled rate that can be set by the user.

Q: How much oil does the system use in comparison to other chain lubricants?

The xSystem dispenses approximately 0.03ml (or 1 drop) of oil at your chosen flow rate, this should be set depending on the conditions and user preference. All Scottoiler systems use much less lubrication than traditional chain lubes due to the automatic micro dosing of the chain.

Q: How much oil fling/mess do you get using the xSystem?

The xSystem will fling off no more oil than a traditionally applied spray lubricant. If fling occurs it is because the user preference/setting is too high for the conditions. The system should be adjusted and fling will not happen.

Oil fling also increases when the dispensing tube is not set up correctly. The dispenser nib should always be lightly touching the face of the sprocket in order to dispense a light oil film onto the sprocket face, which will then get pushed into the inside of the rollers using centrifugal force as you ride. If the tube is set up incorrectly and is trying to drip oil directly onto the chain, then this drop is likely to be caught by wind and flung away from the bike landing on your rear wheel or registration plate and not onto the chain.

Oil fling can also occur if the incorrect oil is being used for your temperature climate and may be flowing at a lower viscosity due to temperature. See our oil range for operating temperature ranges.

Q: How often do I need to fill the reservoir?

The system has a reservoir capacity of 60ml. This will typically last approx. 1500 miles but will depend on your chosen flow rate.

Q: How do I fill the xSystem with Scottoil?

The xSystem is easily filled through a filler hole on the top of the unit. Simply remove the small rubber bung by gently pushing it to the side, fill to below the hole and then replace the bung.

Q: What is your recommended flow rate?

The flow rate settings are very much user preference and are dependent on a number of factors, such as ride length, environment & conditions. As a starting point, we recommend one drop every 100 seconds and change depending on rider preference taking into account use and environmental conditions.

Q: How easy is the xSystem to fit?

The xSystem is designed for a simple “Plug and Play” style installation and on most motorcycles it can be fitted to the frame or under the seat. There are multiple options depending on the type of bike you have and the space available. Each kit comes with a complete installation guide and we have Youtube video tutorials on how to install it. The xSystem can be installed by either a competent technical end user, motorcycle technician or dealership.

Q: Does it fit all motorcycles?

The xSystem is designed to be able to fit most motorcycles. Where possible the design has tried to incorporate as many configurations as possible. This is made even easier with the use of our new and improved dispenser mounting solution, which is included in the xSystem kit.

Check our technical page for model specific install guides.

Q: Can I fill my system with a different brand of oil?

No. We have developed our oil specifically for use with the Scottoiler Systems. We know that the makeup/structure of our oil is compatible with all of the materials within the xSystem. Due to the unknown materials, construction and viscosity of other manufacturer oils, we cannot recommend other lubricants. E.g Chainsaw Oil

Q: Is the xSystem Waterproof?

The xSystem is design to be IP (Ingress Protection) 65 rated. These standards indicate:

IP65 Enclosure - IP rated as “dust tight” and protected from low pressure water jets from any direction.
The xSystem is not designed for IP67 (Submersion).

We recommend not using a pressure washer on any part of the xSystem.

Q: Does fitting an xSystem take away the need for all chain maintenance?

The simple answer is No. Depending on your current process the xSystem will take over the lubricating and optimisation of your chain. The specially formulated oil we use will be less contaminated than other lubricants making any cleaning far easier. We always recommend inspecting your chain for signs of wear, damage or stretch before any ride.

A clean, well lubricated and correctly adjusted chain is a happy and healthier chain. The xSystem is designed to maximise its performance regarding lubrication of your chain.

Q: How do I clean my chain before fitting an xSystem?

Using your favourite chain cleaner or paraffin and a small brush is the easiest way to do this, a method recommended by both chain and motorcycle manufacturers. Once you’ve cleaned the chain, we’d suggest applying a little Scottoil all along the length of your chain with a rag or small brush, this is a good starting point for the xSystem to then top up as you ride.

Q: Can I remove the xSystem from one motorcycle then refit to another?

Yes, the xSystem is reasonably straight forward to install and uninstall. It is however plumbed using tubing which carries oil and has a new dispenser mounting solution, which is stuck to the swing arm using an adhesive pad. This dispenser mount is not transferable without compromising the adhesive pad.

In order to fit the system to another bike we would recommend that you completely remove all parts from the original motorcycle and then move the whole system to the new motorcycle, however you may require to purchase replacement parts for the non-transferable parts.

Accessories and spare parts are available through our network of dealers and via our website. You may be able to leave some of the accessories on both bikes making a quicker change over, however please be aware of the oil in the tubing when disconnecting your system.

In some cases, it might be easier and more cost effective to replace the whole xSystem.

Q: How does the xSystem chain oiler from Scottoiler work?

The xSystem chain oiler is an electronic system utilising a solenoid valve that feeds oil from the reservoir to the chain. The inbuilt accelerometer senses the motorcycles movement and will automatically start the lubrication when you start riding your motorcycle and will automatically stop when the motorcycle is stopped.

Q: How much power does the xSystem use?

When the engine is off and the system is connected directly onto the battery the xSystem 3.0 draws approximately 87 µA of power when on sleep mode compared to 2400 µA for version 2.0.

An example of power usage for both systems is as follows for a 10 Ah 12-volt motorcycle battery set at 1 drop per 60 seconds:

xSystem 2.0 – 2.4 mA drawing a total of 57.6 mA per day = 173 days until fully flat.

xSystem 3.0 – 87 µA drawing a total of 2mA per day = 5000 days (13 years) until fully flat.

If the system is connected directly onto the battery and the bike is stored over long periods of time, such as during the winter, or if you are worried about the draw, you can simply switch the unit off completely by pressing the On/Off button. The xSystem will still remember your settings once you turn it back on again.

This is also a good solution if you are moving the bike on a trailer or ferry as don't want it to start oiling.

Q: How is the xSystem 3.0 connected to a power supply?

A feature of the xSystem 3.0 compared to the previous xSystem 2.0 is that the system can now be powered by a connection to a switched live via an accessory manager (e.g Hex Ezcan, Denalli Cansmart) as well as the standard connection directly onto the battery terminals.

Q: How do I tell the difference between xSystem 2.0 and 3.0?

The xSystem 3.0 packaging is a similar colour to the xSystem 2.0 with noticeable differences including 3.0 wording and visuals on the kit sleeve cover.

The xSystem version is easily identified using its serial number on the rear of the system at the attachable mount:

xSystem 2.0 - X-010400 > X-023492

xSystem 3.0 – X-021210 >

NOTE: There is a cross over period between V2.0 & V3.0
